How Smoko Finance works, from enquiry to funding
Seven stages sit between a two-minute enquiry and money in the business account. Here’s what happens at each one, what gets checked, and exactly where you stay in control.
Start to finish in seven steps
- Enquiry — a free two-minute online form. Not an application for credit.
- Call-back — a business-finance specialist phones, usually within one business day.
- Matching — your enquiry is paired with lenders suited to your revenue and purpose.
- Verification and assessment — identity, business details and recent bank data are reviewed.
- Offer review — you read the amount, term, repayments and total cost at your own pace.
- Acceptance — nothing proceeds until you formally say yes.
- Funding — funds transfer after acceptance; same-day funding is possible before the lender's cut-off.
1. The enquiry — two minutes, and not a credit application
The form asks who you are, roughly what the business turns over, how much you're after and what it's for. It's free, carries no obligation, and is not an application for credit — you're opening a conversation, not lodging paperwork. Nothing needs uploading at this stage; documents come later, and only if you decide to go ahead.
2. The call-back — usually within one business day
A specialist phones to confirm the basics: your revenue picture, the amount, the purpose, and whether the timing works. This call is also a sense-check in both directions. If the numbers don't support the ask, a good specialist says so on the phone rather than letting an application fail slowly — sometimes the honest advice is a smaller amount, a different structure, or waiting a couple of months.
3. Matching with suitable lenders
Rather than firing your details at every lender in the market, the enquiry is matched with lenders whose criteria genuinely fit your revenue profile, industry and purpose. That matters because a decline restarts the clock, and different structures suit different needs — the business loans hub shows the range, from term loans to lines of credit.
4. Verification and assessment — what actually gets checked
The lender verifies the director's identity, confirms the ABN and business details, and reviews recent business bank data — with most weight on the latest six months of revenue, its consistency, and how existing commitments sit against it. Credit information is part of the picture too. Expect the odd clarifying question; answering it the same hour is one of the biggest things you can do for speed. Our eligibility page unpacks each factor.
5. The offer — read it properly
Approval means the lender has issued an offer: an amount, a rate, a term and a repayment schedule. Before accepting, check three things. First, the total cost over the life of the loan, not just the size of each repayment. Second, the term — does it match how long the money will be working for you? Third, repayment fit — map the schedule against your real cash flow, including your quiet weeks. The concepts behind loan pricing are explained on rates and fees.
6. Acceptance — the only step that commits you
Up to this point you can walk away at no cost, and people do. Nothing proceeds without your signed acceptance, and no reputable specialist will rush you into one.
7. Funding — and the cut-off reality
After acceptance, the lender transfers the funds. Accept early enough in the business day, before the lender's banking cut-off, and same-day funding is possible for eligible approved applications. Accept late in the afternoon — or on a Friday — and the money typically lands the next business day. Weekends and public holidays pause the banking rails for everyone.
Approved is not funded
These two milestones get conflated constantly, and the confusion causes real planning mistakes. Approval is the lender's yes plus an offer. Funding is money in your account — which needs your acceptance, then transfer time. A same-day approval can still fund the next day if acceptance lands after cut-off. The full distinction is unpacked in same-day approval vs same-day funding.
What Smoko Finance is — and isn't
Smoko Finance is a business-finance referral service. Your enquiry is passed to experienced Australian commercial finance specialists who handle the matching, application and lender relationship. Smoko Finance is not a lender and not a bank, does not make credit decisions, does not provide credit assistance, and does not publish rates — because rates are set by each lender for each applicant, and a number that isn't yours would only mislead. Enquiring costs you nothing.
What you control
The stages above have their own clocks, but two levers sit entirely in your hands:
- Completeness. Accurate figures, a specific purpose, current bank data and honesty about existing commitments remove almost every avoidable delay.
- Responsiveness. Answering the call-back, replying to verification questions quickly and reading the offer when it arrives keeps the process moving at your speed, not the calendar's.
Do both well and you've given the process its best genuine chance of finishing in days rather than weeks — without cutting a single corner.
Frequently asked questions
Is the two-minute enquiry an application for credit?
No. The enquiry is a request for a call-back — it gathers your contact details, rough revenue, amount and purpose so a specialist can have a useful conversation with you. An application to a lender only happens later, if you choose to proceed after that conversation.
What actually happens on the specialist call-back?
The specialist confirms your figures, purpose and timing, answers your questions, and gives you a straight read on whether the ask is workable. If it isn’t, they say so — sometimes suggesting a smaller amount, a different structure or waiting until recent revenue supports the request.
Do I deal with Smoko Finance or the lender during assessment?
Smoko Finance is a referral service, so once your enquiry is matched, the finance specialist and the lender run the assessment. Verification questions and the eventual offer come from them; Smoko Finance does not make credit decisions at any stage.
What should I check in the offer before accepting it?
Three things: the total cost over the life of the loan (not just each repayment), whether the term matches how long the money will be working for you, and whether the repayment schedule fits your real cash flow — including quiet periods. Also note any conditions, such as a director’s guarantee.
Can I pull out partway through the process?
Yes, at any point up to acceptance, at no cost. The enquiry, call-back, matching and even a lender’s approval commit you to nothing — only your signed acceptance of an offer does. Nobody reputable will pressure you across that line.
How soon after accepting an offer does the money arrive?
Accept before the lender’s banking cut-off on a business day and funds can arrive the same day for eligible approved applications; accept later and next business day is typical. Your own bank’s inbound processing adds a little variability nobody controls.
