Eligibility

Business loan eligibility, factor by factor

No magic minimum turnover, no cut-off score — lenders read a whole picture. Here is every factor that goes into it, so you can judge your own position before anyone else does.

Why there's no minimum published here

Plenty of finance sites advertise a threshold: a minimum monthly turnover, a minimum time trading, a minimum credit score. You won't find those numbers on this page, because publishing them would mean inventing them. Lenders in this space don't run a single pass-or-fail test — they read a whole picture and weigh the parts against each other. A business trading for a shorter time with very steady revenue can present better than an older business whose income has gone quiet.

What follows is what actually goes into that picture. Read it as a way of assessing your own position honestly, not as a formula. The structured version of every fact behind it sits on our loan data hub.

The factors lenders weigh up

An active ABN and verifiable business details

This is the one genuine gate. Finance arranged through Smoko Finance is for business purposes only, so the business needs an active ABN and details that check out against it — entity name, structure and trading name. Sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts are all in scope. If an ABN has lapsed or the registered details are stale, sort that first: it's a short job that otherwise stalls an application at the verification step.

Trading revenue, weighted to the last six months

Recent revenue is the engine of the assessment. Lenders read your business bank activity and look hardest at the latest six months — how much lands, how regularly it lands, and whether the trend is holding, growing or slipping. Consistency counts as much as volume. Our guide on how lenders read six months of revenue walks through exactly what an assessor sees in that window.

Time trading

A longer trading history helps. It gives lenders more evidence and usually widens the range of lenders prepared to look. A short history isn't an automatic decline, but the options narrow and the amounts tend to be smaller until the record builds. If your business is early in its life, read business loans for new businesses before you enquire — it sets out plainly what a short history can and can't support.

Industry

Industry is context, not a verdict. It tells a lender how your revenue is likely to behave: whether takings arrive daily through a terminal or monthly through progress claims, how seasonal your year is, and how exposed the business is to one large customer. Some lenders are more comfortable with some sectors than others, which is precisely why matching an enquiry to suitable lenders beats firing it at all of them.

Existing commitments and other debt

Every repayment already leaving your account — equipment finance, another business loan, a merchant advance sweep, an ATO payment arrangement — is netted off before a lender judges what a new repayment could sit on. Carrying existing finance is normal and rarely fatal by itself. What causes real trouble is undeclared debt, because it shows up in the bank data anyway and turns an arithmetic question into a credibility one.

Credit information

Credit information about the business and its directors forms part of assessment. An imperfect history doesn't end the conversation on its own — lenders here lean heavily on recent trading performance — but it does shape which lenders are a realistic match. Far better to raise it yourself on the call-back than to let it surface halfway through an application.

Purpose and affordability

Lenders fund specific business purposes: stock, equipment, wages, a fit-out, a tax bill, a gap between invoices. A vague "just in case" request is harder to assess and harder to approve. Sitting beside purpose is affordability — whether the repayments fit the cash flow your statements actually show, including the quiet weeks. A loan the business can't comfortably service isn't a win for anyone.

Verification

Identity and business verification run on every application: a director photo ID check, confirmation of ABN and business details, and the occasional question about a specific transaction that needs context. What gets asked for, and at which stage, is set out on documents required. Worth knowing: out-of-date financial statements don't make you ineligible — low-doc business loans exist for exactly that situation.

Who isn't eligible

Three groups are outside this style of lending entirely, and we'd rather say so in thirty seconds than after a wasted application:

  • Pre-revenue startups. A business with no trading income yet has nothing for a revenue-based assessment to read. Business plans and projections aren't banked income, and banked income is what this lending runs on.
  • Personal, consumer or household borrowing. Finance is strictly for business purposes. Consumer lending is not offered or arranged, in any amount, for any reason.
  • Businesses without an active ABN. An active ABN is required, full stop — it's how the business is identified and verified.

Your two-minute self-check

Before you spend even a couple of minutes on an enquiry, run through this honestly:

  • Is the ABN active, and do the registered details match how the business actually trades?
  • Does business income land in a business bank account — all of it, not just the card settlements?
  • Can I describe the last six months of revenue in one sentence, and would a stranger reading the statements agree with me?
  • Can I list every existing repayment leaving the account, including any ATO arrangement?
  • Do I have a specific purpose and a specific amount, rather than a rough figure and a feeling?
  • If a repayment started next week, what money would make it — and would it still be there in a quiet month?

If a question makes you wince, that's useful information, not a verdict. Some of it is fixable in a fortnight; some of it is worth a straight conversation on the call-back.

Meeting the factors isn't approval

Say it plainly: the enquiry is free, takes about two minutes and is not an application for credit. Ticking every factor on this page doesn't make an approval, and nothing here is a promise of one. Approval is the lender's decision, made on the full application, and it's never guaranteed by Smoko Finance — we're a referral service, not a lender, and we make no credit decisions. Nothing proceeds unless a lender makes you an offer and you choose to accept it.

The useful part is that most of these factors respond to effort. Cleaner banking, declared commitments, a specific purpose and a request sized to your recent revenue are all inside your control — and together they change the picture a lender sees far more than any single number could.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t Smoko Finance publish a minimum turnover or credit score?

Because no such figure exists to publish. Lenders assess revenue, consistency, time trading, industry, existing commitments and credit information together, and each lender balances them differently. A published threshold would either exclude businesses that would actually be considered, or raise hopes for businesses that wouldn’t. A short call-back gives you a straighter answer than any number could.

Can a sole trader with an ABN enquire, or is it companies only?

Sole traders can enquire, as can partnerships, companies and trusts. The structure matters far less than the trading record behind it: an active ABN, business income banked through a business account, and revenue a lender can read. Directors or the owner will still go through identity verification whichever structure you trade under.

Does an ATO payment plan make my business ineligible?

No. Tax arrangements are common in small business and are a normal part of the picture rather than a disqualifier. The instalments are visible in your bank data, so lenders will see them regardless and net them off when judging capacity. Declaring the arrangement upfront — including how long it runs — is far better than letting it be discovered.

How much does time trading matter compared with revenue?

Both matter, and they compensate for each other to a point. Longer trading gives lenders more evidence and widens the lenders willing to look; strong, consistent recent revenue can carry a shorter history. What neither factor can replace is the other extreme — no banked revenue at all leaves nothing to assess, whatever the age of the ABN.

Will a default or a mark on my credit file rule me out?

Not automatically. Credit information is one input, and lenders in the revenue-assessed space weight recent trading performance heavily. What it does change is which lenders are a realistic match, which is why the detail belongs on the call-back rather than in a surprise later. Age of the issue, size and whether it’s resolved all matter.

Does my industry affect whether I’m eligible?

Industry shapes the assessment rather than gating it. It tells a lender how your income is likely to arrive, how seasonal you are, and how concentrated your customer base is. Some lenders have appetites that suit some sectors better, so the practical effect is on matching — which lenders see the enquiry — rather than on whether you can enquire.

Can I use the funds for something personal if the business is eligible?

No. The finance is for business purposes only, and the stated purpose forms part of the assessment. Paying down a personal debt, funding a home expense or anything household falls outside what these lenders arrange. If the need is genuinely personal, this isn’t the right product and no framing of the application changes that.
